A few more facts on Brazil:

As we continue our quest through the heart of the Amazon and fast approach the “breadbasket” (or more appropriately, the “soybean basket” of Brazil), some interesting tidbits taken from presentations on the state of the country:

  • Brazilian farmers are among the most productive in the world. The challenge is not production – the real opportunity is improving the country’s infrastructure.A very high percentage of goods spoil before they are ever able to make it to market in Brazil, let alone elsewhere in the world. In assessing the difficulty of navigating these parts of Brazil, it is way better understood.

  • As an aside, thank you Dwight D. Eisenhower for having the foresight to use the abundant labor after the end of World War II to embark on the interstate highway system.A comparable system in Brazil would do wonders to alleviate the field to market challenges, but given the high debt and public welfare issues, it will be a challenge to make that commitment wholesale in Brazil today.

  • One of the biggest challenges the country faces is the high percentage of individuals employed by the government, and tied to this, the culture of corruption that has made “making best use of the government spending” all the more challenging. And until recently, it was also understood that government officials were immune from prosecution. With the help of a new generation of U.S. educated Brazilian attorneys, that is slowly changing.
