Start with this - we had some recording catch-up on 6/5 - more than double the numbers we generated in recent days.
The first 40 miles for 6/5 takes the Morris in Motion team through the state Roraima into the State of Amazonas - Giant Woohoo. Continuing on Route 174 through the territory until mile #230 or so puts us in Manaus, largest and gateway city in the Amazon as well as the recent site of the first round for the American men's national team during the most recent World Cup of Soccer. Brazilians in general say they only go there is it is a business trip. It is isolated, hot and by road (our choice), not the easiest path to Rio (it is actually closer to Lima, Peru than Rio). And then comes the Amazon River.
Some tidbits on the Amazon:
- 20% of the fresh water in the world runs through the Amazon river;
- The river originates in Peru with water draining east;
- The river covers the land area that comprises 30% of South America;
- The average water discharge of the Amazon is equivalent to the collective discharges of the next seven largest rivers combined;
- The fresh water discharge into the Atlantic dilutes the salinity in 1,000,000 square miles of the Atlanta Ocean;
Across the mighty Amazon and down a the only major north/south road, Route 319 in the area between Amazon tributaries to the south/southwest to route 230 east to the Amazonan town of Humaita in the Brazilian state of Rondonia. The via Route 364 southeast through the towns of Ariquemes, Jaru, Pimenta Bueno through multiple areas of indigenous Brazilian Indians and rural areas. We cross into the Brazilian state of Mato Grosso to the town of Campo Novo.
A total of 1,455 miles for the day.
