As of last night's postings (5/22), we had increased another 750 miles over the weekend, but admittedly not all steps have been input yet. An update on our map progress will be sent out tomorrow to recap the busy weekend. Our numbers of individuals tracking every day are great. Estimates are OK as well. This is a good moment to send a reminder: LISTEN TO YOUR BODY!!! He who shall remain nameless did not do so over the weekend and wound up with a ligament issue in his foot while pretending to be Roger Federer when his game more closely resembles Sheldon Cooper. As a result, it is going to force a shift to....ughhhhh....swimming and biking to pull in the steps. A reminder: - Stretch, stretch, stretch. - If something in your legs does not feel right, do not push it and give it a breather, or switch to an exercise that will reduce the wear and tear. Work your way in slowly. - Make sure you are building back the potassium and other minerals you need to continue the exercise. Bananas and potatoes (the latter in moderation) both have a ton of potassium. Encourage the olive oil and sea salt roasted potatoes and not the French Fry version - sorry McDonalds! Of course, if your body feels great and is telling you that you are ready to complete the ironman/woman triathlon with no preparation, let your brain take over. Build your way up and give your body time to recover. May the force be with you!!!!
This little tidbit of excitement is courtesy of our stepping machine in Great Bend, Kansas, and it has been verified with a separate source - you can attain "steps" by standing up! Say what? Yes indeed, and here's how.
If you have a standing desk at work and stand while working at a computer, you can earn 46 steps per minute or 670 steps per 15 minutes, or 2,670 steps per hour. How loudly can you say WOOHOO. Some caution though - it is also not the best idea to stand too long in one place for back, knee and joint issues, especially for those of us who are stuck on 29 years of age...LOL. Of course this has lead to some questions about other "activities" also having equivalent step numbers that can be implied/assumed. Let's set the record straight: - Earning steps for swallowing gulps of beer (or wine): Um, how about NO! - Earning steps while watching somebody else exercise: Nice try, but no so much.... - Earning steps while punching the remote button on the television or texting on your cell phone: actually, there is a movement for these to count as NEGATIVE STEPS - stay tuned (pun intended). So to repeat, standing during the day at a standing desk is worth 46 steps per minute....690 per 15 minutes and 2,670 per hour. To all,
First, updated group count… Barrow – 5 Camden – 8 Hinesville – 8 Covington – 11 Forsyth/Dawsonville –9 Gainesville - 21 Great Bend – 29 Manteca – 6 Wisconsin – 6 MTech – 8 Oakdale -3 Corporate – 12 Savannah Media - 3 MNC of Tennessee – 16 Statesboro/AMS USA – 9 Turlock – 2 WCBI – 6 WDEF – 11 WMGT – 2 WTVQ – 12 WWAY – 14 WXXV - 20 Exciting progress since earlier in the week: Atlanta Group – from Kewanee Mississippi, headed west to Meridian, Mississippi then I-59 south through Hattiesburg and Piscayne, MS, before redirecting west on I-12 once hitting Slidell, Louisiana. Continuing on I-12 until reconnecting in the LA capital, Baton Rouge. Trekking on they continue on I-10 past Lafayette until reaching Rayne, LA in/near the Bayou. Knocking out Tuscaloosa one day and Baton Rouge the next…if that was UGA, we’re talking national championship contention!!! 337 miles since the last measurement. Savannah Group – off to an early start, the low country GA contingent sprints (OK, walks fast) west on I-10 through the balance of Florida, through Mobile, Alabama and past the Gulf Coast of Mississippi (including WXXV, whose staff hands out bottled water to return the favor from Katrina). The Savannah group continues on to Bridge, LA, just short of Lafayette, LA. Though a team effort, there may indeed be a contest brewing for which Georgia group arrives in Brownsville, TX first. Sunset Beach NC Group – WWAY and Camden step past Camden on I-20, on to and past the state capital at Columbia, farther west to the Georgia border at Augusta, lamenting that this contest couldn’t be scheduled for say the first full week of April…..then with vigor through the Peach State until completing their 205 added miles just 5 miles short of …..Covington, GA. Enjoying a quiet dinner in the square…. Bonnaroo in TN (Manchester, TN) – From Woodstock, AL, MNC of Tennessee and WDEF continue on I-20 past The Crimson Tide, trace the steps of the Atlanta group until the trek west on I-12 in Louisiana. They come to a rest on their 304th mile of this section on the shores of Lake Pontchartrain in Louisiana. Will there be a nighttime venture to the Big Easy…mums the word! Bienville NF Group – From the Holden district in Louisiana I-12 west of Hammond (apologies to the Mississippi contingent who were wondering if they had been mislead into the depths of the bayou), crawfish and gumbo are great, but the taste buds are longing for some beef brisket. Crossing the Texas border, the Mississippians clear all the way to beautiful Houston, Texas. WOOHOO! Arch of St. Louis Group – From St. Robert, Missouri, WTVQ and Wisconsin continue on I-44 past Springfield, past the rebuilding town of Joplin, MO before crossing the border into Oklahoma and finally concluding their 231 miles just short of Claremore, OK, with Tulsa in the distance. Will it be Glarus/Potosi microbrewed beer or Kentucky bourbon? What do you mean both?!?!?! Arches National Park Group – Little did MNC of California, Great Bend and Ellsworth know what was in store for them on Day #2. After continuing from the Pueblo Reservation on I-40, through Albuquerque with picturesque New Mexico, suddenly the group leaves the interstate and heads down US 285. This gives them the opportunity to go through Roswell, New Mexico and its UFOs, before arriving at dusk at Carlsbad, a quick jaunt to Carlsbad Caverns to see the thousands of bats emerge from the cave at dusk, then crossing the high desert border with Texas before finally arriving at I-10 about to head east in the town of Ft Stockton, Texas, which by the way, supposedly sports a ghost town. 457 miles covered…over the “X-files highway.” Great job all – by the end of the weekend all the groups should be in Texas!!! It’s Friday!!! 149 Stepping Olympians have registered steps through Wednesday the 18th. Who is setting the pace / most lured by all that is the Olympic Carnival in Rio, you ask (and with at least 4 days input)? Here you go – a collective WOOHOO for !!!! 56 of the 149 have input for five days. Click hereTo help myself with the pedometer (and so I don’t miss keeping my tab for the day), I have a piece of paper and pen next to my bed and the last thing I do is record the pedometer and reset to prepare for the next day.
And as a reminder, every single solitary step counts. As a entire Stepping Group, we are averaging a hair under 11,200 per day!!! Awesome, and our best to date. With a weekend upcoming!!! I’ll update you on each group’s progress this weekend, captured through the end of today, so encourage all to record all their steps! http://www.mmiwellness.com/step-10-challenge.html P.S.: and as an aside – up to 220 registered to help bring home the Gold!!! Have a great and exercise-rich weekend! to edit. To all,
Terrific start to the process, we spiked well past 200 registrants and everyone is ramping up. The quicker the information is input each day the more accurate the count, but it will be captured in these reports while giving a day for the steps to catch up. Barrow – 5 Camden – 8 Hinesville – 8 Covington – 11 Forsyth/Dawsonville –10 Gainesville - 20 Great Bend – 29 Manteca – 6 Wisconsin – 5 MTech – 8 Oakdale -3 Corporate – 12 Savannah Media - 3 MNC of Tennessee – 16 Statesboro/AMS USA – 9 Turlock – 2 WCBI – 6 WDEF – 9 WMGT – 2 WTVQ – 12 WWAY – 13 WXXV - 20 Kudos on this note to WXXV and Covington for a great participation rate in the contest. And Great Bend for setting the benchmark. Given the sign-up numbers, we’re rearranging some of the joint efforts to consolidate efforts as follows:
Here are some stats through Monday the 16th: Total miles – 1,660. Average steps per day – 11,376 (if I may say, well done!!!) 130 participants have reported and a good number with at least 2 days. So where are the groups on the quest for a very south Texas rendezvous? Atlanta Group – heading west on I-20, blew through Georgia and Alabama (shockingly did not say ROLL TIDE on the way through Tuscaloosa) and just crossed the Mississippi line near Kewanee, Mississippi; Savannah Group – ventured down I-16 then followed mapquest around Ft Stewart and through Vidalia onion country Georgia (and leaving the event planner up to his neck in Vidalia onion soil for choosing this route), crossing I-75 south of Valdosta and continuing into Florida until hitting I-10. Then from I-10 past Tallahassee through to Westville, FL on I-10. Sunset Beach NC Group – WWAY and Camden cross the NC/SC border before, heading west to Florence SC on 501/76 and then from I-20, heading west until finishing just short of……Camden, SC. Conspiracy theories are abound….. Bonnaroo in TN (Manchester, TN) – deciding brilliantly to avoid three days at the upcoming musical event without bathing facilities, the Tennesseeans (and very North Georgians) head down Tennessee 50 to US 231 en route to Decatur, AL where they hit I-65 south to Birmingham, AL, then west on !-20 toward Woodstock, AL. Phil Cox has Roll Tide at the tip of his tongue, and perhaps not so shockingly the McMinnville contingent is all wearing Pat Summit orange…. Bienville NF Group – WXXV and WCBI head west on I-20 to the capital in Jackson, MS, then south on I-55 past the Louisiana border. Upon reaching I-10, though the lure of New Orleans gumbo and the French quarter is great, the focus on the prize takes them about 10 miles west on I-10 to Holden, LA. Arch of St. Louis Group – I-44 southwest toward Springfield, MO as they wait on stepping reinforcements. After passing the exit for Mark Twain National Forest, they camp for the night in Robert, MO, the Ozarks in the distance to their left. Arches National Park Group – Great Bend and the California locations not sure they want to leave the astounding Arches landscape and head into the high desert, but being the troopers they are, take US 191 to US 491, cross into Colorado briefly (accompanied by a query of which brain surgeon suggested this starting point and route), south into New Mexico to Gallup, then west on I-40 until arriving near the Pueblo Indian Reservation en route to Albuquerque.. To all we say WOOHOO all the way through the US of A. To all,
This will be the first time we’ve started a step contest on a Saturday (5/14), so it hopefully be a good way to kick it off with good step numbers Day #1. I’m planning to (gulp/yikes/the polar opposite of Woohoo) include some swimming time this go around to try to ease the burden on the legs/feet. Speaking of which – take the time to stretch and hydrate. For all - remember the basic safety and preparation elements, with a couple of words of wisdom (?).
The more the merrier – it is always easier to gain steps with a group. It is also a great time to avoid the tube and technology, except of course for an iPod or near facsimile for entertainment if you are going it alone. Seriously, and to repeat, emphasis on stretching and hydration. http://www.mmiwellness.com/step-10-challenge.html Three days to go until kick-off and game on, or perhaps more appropriately, RIO GAMES ON!!!
